Operating On A Boat With An Inboard or Bilge

Below are instructions for boats with inboards or a bilge.

Ventilation and Blower Use:

• If the boat has an inboard gasoline engine or enclosed compartments, operate the bilge blower for at least 4–5 minutes before starting the engine to clear any gasoline or propane vapors from the bilge.

• Perform a “sniff test” in the bilge and engine compartment after running the blower to ensure no fuel vapors remain.

• Consider installing a gas vapor detection and alarm device for added safety.

• Run the blower continuously when idling, during frequent starts/stops (e.g., for water sports), or after fueling to prevent vapor buildup.

Before lighting the Floating Flame:

If the boat has an inboard gasoline engine or enclosed compartments, run the bilge blower for 4–5 minutes before lighting the fire pit to clear any propane or gasoline vapors that may have accumulated in the bilge.
